POTATOES & RICE
NONE AVAILABLE FOR SHEARERS. INFORMATION FROM FOOD CONTROLLER. Advice that it was not possible at present to make supplies of potatoes or rice available for shearers has been received by Mr R. W. Kebbell, chairman of the Wairarapa Primary Production Council, from Mr J. E. Thomas, Food Controller. « Mr Thomas stated that only sufficient quantities of potatoes were available at present for defence requirements and seed purposes. The Australian authorities had advised, that no rice would be available for civilian consumption in either Australia or New Zealand. The only quantities coming forward were for orders placed on behalf of the armed forces. As to jam supplies, Mr Thomas stated that all jam manufacturers had been authorised to release through the normal trading channels a certain proportion of their total production, and when deliveries were made, there should be no difficulty in obtaining the supplies of jam required.
