BREAD & MEAT
INCREASE IN GERMAN RATIONS FOLLOWING ON URGENT WARNINGS. FROM MINISTRY OF HEALTH. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright! (Received This Day, Noon.) LONDON, September 15. In Berlin officially it is announced that the week’s bread ration, for persons over 20 years w.li be increased on October 19 by I a pound and that the meat ration will be increased by 1>- ounces and 3 ounces for persons doing heavy work. This increase, it is reported,'is due to urgent warnings from the Ministry of Health that the former rations are insufficient for the Winter time. Under the new ration scale adults in Germany get llj ounces of meat weekly, children under six get less than % a pound and older children nearly one pound and manual workers 2 pounds. The new bread ration gives adults 4J pounds, with extra allowances for manual and night workers, An additional ration of cheese will also be issued.
The “Evening Standard’s” correspondent at Geneva suggests that the increase in the bread ration is possible owing to a better harvest in Germany and the importation of wheat from occupied countries, notably France, where the farmers have been ordered to deliver all grain to the Government. The increase in meat is possible because of the slaughter, of more livestock, owing to the shortage of feeding stuffs.
