TRAINING AS NURSES
OPEN TO MAORI GIRLS.
MANY ALREADY QUALIFIED
The fact that there was no bar to Maori applicants for training as nurses was made clear at today’s meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board. Mr J. F. Thompson said he had been asked by representatives of the Hukarere Native School if there was any opening for Maori girls for training as nurses at the Masterton Hospital. Personally, he thought it would be to the advantage of everyone if they took up such training. Miss McKenny said there was no bar to Maori applicants. Many Maori girls had been trained successfully. The managing-secretary, Mr Norman Lee, stated that a Maori nurse was serving with the New Zealand Army Nursing Service overseas. It was decided to notify the principal of the school of the position.
