A credit balance of £1423 was reported in the General /recount and accounts totalling £llB were passed. Since the last meeting borough rates totalling £654 had been paid. The Building Committee reported that Mr Lavelle, of Wellington, as assessor for the Trust, had been given full authority to negotiate settlements in respect of all claims for earthquake damage and in cases where agreement was reached with the assessors for the State Fire Office his findings were to be final and binding on theTrust. In cases where agreement could not be reached an endeavour was to be made to reach a settlement m accordance with the arbitration provisions of the policies. Mr A. Owen Jones stated that in his opinion the assessor had been given too wide an authority and wnen the report of the building committee was /adopted he recorded his vote against the passage in the report in respect to those powers.
