SERIOUS CHARGE

SOLDIER BEFORE COURT. A charge of assaulting a married woman at Carterton on September a with intent to commit rape was preferred against James Joseph Cate, a soldier, of Lower Hutt, when he appeared before Messrs S-. L. P. Free and L. J .Taylor, J’s.P., in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court today. Accused was represented by Mr A. B. S’evwright. of Wellington. Detec-tive-Sergeant W. Kane, conducted the proceedings for the police. The Court was cleared during the taking of evidence. The accused, who pleaded hot guilty, was committed to the Supreme Courtin Wellington for trial. Bail was allowed in accused’s own recognisance of £lOO. on condition that he remained in close custody in camp pending his trial. _
