“THE DOCTOR AND THE DEBUTANTE.” “The Doctor and the Debutante” will be finally shown tonight. “LADIES IN RETIREMENT.” The unforgettable drama of four women and one man in a house of dreadful secrets is the story of ‘Ladies in Retirement,” which will be shown tomorrow night. Ida Lupino gives _ a brilliant performance as the masochistic woman who murders her mistress to keep a roof over the heads of her pathetic sisters. Elsa Lanchester and Evelyn Keyes are the sisters, tragically funny in their simplicity and their cunning.. Louis Hayward has a murderer’s soul, but he lacks the courage and the motive. The story is set in a picturesque house on the lonely fogbound marshlands close to the English coast. The house is owned by a retired actress. Ida Lupino is her companion, whose efforts to obtain a peaceful sanctuary for her two rather unbalanced sisters is the basic motive of the drama.
