The “Sunday Dispatch” says that General von Bock’s main German armies are still 20 miles from Stalingrad, but that narrow wedges have been driven to within eight miles of the city. The Russians are developing a new offensive eastward of Leningrad, and have reached a point 15 miles from the city. A fierce battle is raging on the Neva River. Moscow reports state that the offensive is developing favourably and the Germans are falling back. The Moscow radio reports that Russian units recaptured several strategic heights on the Terek River front after battles lasting several days, in which three companies of the First German Alpine Division were wiped out. Strong attacks by Hungarian forces southward of Voronezh were smashed and much booty has fallen into Russian hands. General Zhukov’s Rzhev offensive is developing favourably. Some Russian units have advanced seven miles in two days.
