Entry Into Owen Stanley Range AUSTRALIAN POSITIONS OUTFLANKED FIERCE STRUGGLE IN PROGRESS ON MOUNTAIN TRAIL LONDON, September 10. Australian troops are fighting- vigorously to stem a Japanese break-through in the Owen Stanley mountains. The Japanese have managed to push forward to Ifogi, ten miles south of a gap in the range. The enemy have outflanked the Australian positions at Myola, south of Kokoda. The Australians are fighting back tenaciously, and are supported by Allied pilots in non-stop attacks on the invaders. A fierce struggle is in progress on the narrow and precipitous mountain trail south of Ifogi. Many mountainous ranges lie ahead of the Japanese. The correspondent of the Australian Broadcasting Commission sums up the position, saying that it is clear the Japanese drive toward the main gap in the ranges, only 50 or 60 miles from Port Moresby, has met with a measure of success not thought possible. Once again the Japanese has appeared as a tough, gritty and resourceful enemy. There is nothing to suggest that our forces will not be able to handle the situation, but the situation itself is new evidence of the determination of the Japanese to strike at Australia.
