CARTERTON

VITAL STATISTICS FIGURES FOR AUGUST. (“Times-Age” Special.) There were nine births, four marriages and one death registered in Carterton during August. Personal items. Constable S. Hercock. Levin, was a visitor to Carterton yesterday. The funeral of the late Mr C. W. Hercock took place yesterday, there being a large cortege. The Rev. W. J. Couling conducted the services at the residence at Waihakeke and at the graveside at the Clareville Cemetery. The Druids funeral ritual was read by P.A. Bro. W. Fryer. The pall-bear-ers were Messrs C. H. D. Hercock, S. Hercock, J. Hercock, F. Hercock (sons of deceased) and Bros. P. Reid and K. H. Reid (members of the Druids’ Lodge, of whom deceased was a very old member). Many beautiful wreaths covered the casket. BOWLING .CLUB MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Mr F. L. Barr presided over a. meeting of the general committee of the Carterton Bowling Club last evening. The annual balance sheet, which was submitted by the secretary, Mr Barber, was discussed and approved for presentation at the annual meeting which will be held on Thursday week. The secretary of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre wrote asking the club’s opinion in regard to the holding of the annual meeting and it was resolved to support the suggestion not tci hold the meeting. It was decided to support the holding of the Wairarapa New Year tourney at Masterton and also the holding of a veterans’ tourney for bowlers 70 years and over. It was resolved to support the proposal to abandon the Booth Cup and Duthie Shield competition this year.

Sharp Earthquake. A sharp earthquake was felt at 9.55 o’clock last evening. It was preceded by -a long and loud rumble.
