MEETING AT OTAKI
MASTERTON RACING CLUB HOPEFUL NEGOTIATIONS PROCEEDING. PAST YEAR’S ACTIVITIES. According to a statement made at the annual meeting of the Masterton Racing Club last night, negotiations are in train for the Masterton Club to hold a race meeting on the Otaki course next month. Pending receipt of confirmation of the arrangements, the Masterton Club is hopeful of a satisfactory arrangement being made to enable a successful meeting to be held. The president, Mr J. M. James, said he was sorry to say bad weather was against the meeting last spring and the balance sheet showed a loss of £282, after writing-off depreciation amounting to £ll9. The club appreciated the action of some of the trainers and owners in standing by the club on the second day. It was a sign of the times that the expenses were a little higher than usual. A definite arrangement had been made in regard to the lease of the course. The club very much appreciated the action of the secretary in reducing his salary, on account of there being no racing. The local trainers had met the club and had made an arrangement for six months whereby the track could be maintained. Mr James thanked the stewards for their courtesy to him during the year. A number of their members were away on active service and he hoped they would have a speedy return. He trusted that all members would stand by the club and keep their subscriptions paid. Seconding the motion for the adoption of the report and balance sheet. Mr S. J. W. Gill said he thought that a great many members of the club would be loyal to it and would continue to give their financial support. Officers were elected unopposed as follow: —President, Mi’ J. M. James; vice-presidents, Messrs C. J. Bennett and S. J. W. Gill; stewards, Messrs R. Buick, Walter Cameron, A. Corskie, J. B. Moodie, I. Macßae, J. H. Payton and C. J. Toxward. Other stewards whose term of office did not expire this year were Messrs J. A. Betts, W. R. P. Cooper, H. L. Esau, J. Jameson, J. Mulvaney, J. C. D. Mackley and N. G. F. Whiteman.
