POSITION WEST OF STALINGRAD
Germans Claim Progress From South-West RUSSIAN ADVANCE IN DON BEND NO ENEMY PROGRESS IN CAUCASUS LONDON, September L A new threat to Stalingrad has developed. The Germans claim that their panzer forces are driving towards the city from, the south-west and that the Russians are falling back. The Germans also say they have widened the breach in the Soviet defences, but there is no confirmation of this claim. North-west of Stalingrad the situation is described as complicated. Several large-scale engagements appear to be going on simultaneously. In one sector in the Don bend the Russians are advancing. Nearer to Stalingrad, at the .Don crossing', the issue is still in doubt. Correspondents say very definitely that the enemy has made no progress at all during the past two or three days. There has been no penetration since the Axis spearhead broke through at one point last week. Since then the enemy forces have had an exceedingly rough time. On the Caucasus front the position has improved. All enemy attempts to land troops on the Kuban coast have failed. On the J/foscow front the Russians are still pressing slowly towards the west.
