Strong Attack in Kokoda Sector TEMPORARY INITIATIVE GAINED ENEMY REMNANTS BEING HUNTED DOWN AT MILNE BAY (By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, September L The Japanese in New Guinea have launched a strong attack in the Kokoda sector against the Australians guarding the mountain route to Port Moresby. The enemy are said to Have temporarily gained the initiative with the use of strong forward patrols. Some bitter fighting continues in the northern arm of Milne Bay, where the Australians are mopping u,p the unevacuated remnants of the Japanese. The invaders have split up into small groups, a correspondent says, and Australian patrols are hunting them down with Tommy-gun, hand-grenade and bayonet. The Japanese show no sign of attempting to relieve their troops, though it is possible that some may escape along ths coast toward Buna..
