e EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE P. AND A. SOCIETY’S OFFICE. (“Times-Age” Special.) It is estimated that the cost of repairs to the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society’s Office in Memorial Square, Carterton, will be between £1,300 to £2,000. SHROUDS REMOVED FROM MERCURY VAPOUR LAMPS. After many months of heavy shrouding the mercury vapour lights in Car-, terton were yesterday relieved of their hoods by the Power Board employees. The improved lighting in the business area last evening was appreciated by shoppers and visitors. PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE DISTRICT BRANCH MEETING. Mr D. L. Taverner presided over a meeting of the Carterton District Patriotic Committee on Thursday evening. Second Lieutenant D. J. McMillan wrote asking for assistance in procuring equipment for the regiment’s boxing team. The secretary stated that the request had been forwarded to the Wellington Pio\incial Patriotic Council. Mr G S. George, hon. organiser to the "Comforts for the Fighting Forces” campaign was accorded a vote of thanks for his successful efforts on behalf oi the Patriotic appeal. It was announced that £lOO had been donated by the Y.M.C.A. Entertainment Committee towards the fund and that a further £350 was required to complete the Carterton Patriotic Appeal quota. Building Society. At a meeting of the directors oi the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society the following appropriations were brawn by ballot: W. Gregory, Lower Hutt. £3OO, ana Miss E. King, Broadway, Carterton, £6OO. Personal Items. To mark his approaching marriage members of the Parkvale Cricket Club tendered a social gathering to their captain, Mr B. J. Whitburn, and presented him with a case of silver teaspoons.
