The Germans’ chief effort in the Caucasus is now seemingly directed toward the Caspian Sea, and they are now probably within 50 miles of Grozny. The .Russians. , who are greatly outnumbered, continue stoutly to prevent German efforts to cross a river in the vicinity of Mozdok, 70 miles west of Grozny. The British United Press reports that the Germans are also pushing down the main railway to the Caspian in an effort to reach Gudermes, where the Germans would then control the branch line to Grozny. The Moscow correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” points out that, the German progress to Mozdok represents an advance of 35 miles in three days. Defensive fighting with enemy tanks and motorised infantry at Mozdok .is mentioned in a supplementary Soviet communique. ENEMY SUBMARINE SUNK IN BLACK SEA. LONDON, August 28. A Moscow report states that an enemy submarine was sunk by Soviet forces operating in the Black Sea. _____
