ADOPTED BY U-BOATS IM CARIBBEAN THREE SHIPS TORPEDOED. 7 BY RAIDERS LYING IN WAIT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, August 27. Three ships have been torpedoed and sunk, two of them within the space of four minutes and one at night in the Caribbean in the first large-scale assault since June, when convoying was introduced. They includeed a me-dium-sized United States merchant vessel. It is believed that two submarines attacked two vessels which were travelling close together. A radio operator explained that the submarines have changed their tactics and now lie in wait for passing vessels, spring up to make a quick attack, and then retire. The Maritime Commission announced that six Liberty ships will be launched on Labour Day, one of which will be named the Samuel Gompers, honouring the founder of the American Federation of Labour. The other’ five will be named in honour of other Labour leaders.
