OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

EARTHQUAKES & SOUND (To the Editor) Sir,—Mr Waters, Chief Engineer of the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board, states that the apparent sound accompanying earthquakes is only a delusion'. I always thought that the action of strata tumbling about down below produced sound which duly registered itself upon the auricular senses. However, what Mr Waters has to say is most reassuring, and to complete my hapniness I only require one of /our readers to write and tell me that, the majority of major earthauakes do not occu’’ at or near the full moon, and that lightning is soundless. Secure m this knowledge, I shall be able to face the vicissitudes of nature with confidence.—Yours, O , SHENKO Masterton. August 28.
