CARTERTON
BOROUGH COUNCIL ‘ MEETING LAST NIGHT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over the meeting of the Borough Council held in the Council Chambers last evening. There were also pi'esent Crs. E. McKenzie, H. Mortensen, Howard E. Jackson, W. A. Hart, W. R. Harry and Miss 0. W. Wolters. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. C. J. DeLacey, L. M. Clark and C. E. Stevens. A special meeting was held at which it was resolved to adopt by way of special order the N.Z. Standard Building by-Laws and to revoke the Carterton Borough Building By-Law. 1904. At the ordinary meeting of the Council the treasurer reported a credit balance in the District Fund of £741 13s Id and in the Gasworks credit balance £393 3s. The Wairarapa Joinery and Cabinet Company was granted permission to make alterations and additions to a properly in Pembroke Street owned by W. Wong. It was resolved that a small section of land be purchased from Mr E. W. Allen for the purpose of a site for a shed to house the chlorination plant when it was installed. The clerk’s action in posting notices to owners of properties in regard to fences abutting on the Moreton Road Reserve and for obtaining an estimate of the cost of repairing the fences on the reserve was endorsed. The Gasworks Committee instructed the manager to make arrangements for the installation of a motor for use at the gas works in case of emergency. It was decided that the overseer's attention be drawn to the slow progress made in connection with chimney repairs. The Plunket Society was granted permission to hold a street sale of daffodils at the end of September. Personal Items. Brigadier Annie Smyth and Miss Rosamond Smyth, who were found murdered at Wairoa, were sisters of Dr. Smyth, who resided in Carterton many years ago. Mrs E. W. Allen has found it necessary to enter- the Croydon Hospital for treatment. Mr W. Spooner Junr., suffered a very painful accident on Saturday night.. While washing his hands a needle, which apparently was embedded in the soap, entered his hand. Mr Spooner was taken to the Master-, ton Hospital where the needle was re-’ moved. Mr Geo. Edge, a vzell known poultry breeder who specialises in Rhode Island Reds, had a very successful sale at his homestead last Saturday. Many of the birds brought record prices.
