ANTICIPATED GAINS
FROM CO-OPERATION IN BRAZIL. FACTORS OF AIR & U-BOAT WARFARE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.445 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 25. American military experts agree that Brazil’s entry into the war opens up entirely new and probably decisive strategic possibilities. Major Seversky, the air expert, says Brazil’s participation cannot be over-estimated. Indeed, it may become a major element for ultimate victory. Air power makes Natal (in Brazil) and Pernambuco as vital strategic points as Gibraltar, Suez and the Dardanelles. Because of the Brazilian Atlantic bulge, Natal and Pernambuco control the mputh of the Atlantic gateway to world communications. This bulge makes direct aerial trans-Atlantic bombardment possible. Major Seversky concludes that a struggle for decisive control of the South Atlantic gateway is now inevitable—either tile United Nations will dominate it from Natal, or the Axis from Dakar.
Major Eliot, in the “Herald-Tribune” emphasises the importance of Brazil for controlling the submarine menace and asserts that, with Brazilian bases available for the Allies, it will be possible to seal the narrow South Atlantic gateway and consequently to check definitely the U-boat war.
