ON APPROACHES TO STALINGRAD

From North-West and South-West SITUATION DESCRIBED AS DANGEROUS RUSSIAN COUNTER-ATTACK IN CAUCASUS LONDON, August 25. Some progress in the drive on Stalingrad has been made by the enemy and the battle rages with'unabated fury. The battle for the industrial city is developing in the plains to the north-west and south-west. North-west of Stalingrad the Germans advancing from the Don elbow have pushed back the Russians in heavy fighting. South-west of the city the enemy is pushing forward and has driven wedges into the Russian defences. ° The situation is described as dangerous. The Russians are trying to smash the enemy tank forces and the Ger-, mans are endeavouring to get their infantry through to attack. The people of Stalingrad are going about their tasks ana working at full pressure, in spite of numerous air alerts. Day and night they are unloading food and oil from the south and arms and ammunition from the north, North, of Stalingrad no important change has taken place. In the south, the Russians have launched a vigorous counterattack in the Caucasus, where the Germans are within 100 miles of the Grozny oil centre and are at the foot of the pass by which the Georgian military road crosses the Caucasus to Tiflis.
