Soldier’s Death.

Private Keith Owen Alexander McEldowney, aged_lB, was found dead in his bed at a battle station near Auckland on Saturday morning. Death was believed to be due to suffocation. Burglary at Railway Station.

The door of the Henderson railway station was forced last night. The safe was blown open with gelignite and cash amounting to about £lO was stolen.

Crippled Children Membership. The total membership of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society on March 31 of this year was 6275. This figure is given in the annual report of the executive council of the society. Manawatu, with 971, has the highest branch membership, while the Canterbury and Westland branch is next with 936 members. New Plymouth has 820, Wanganui 571, Wellington 383, Nelson 240, Gisborne 171, Wairarapa 143, and Hawke’s Bay 100.

Maori Soldier Sent to Gaol. Wiremu Hunia Hiroki, aged 25, a Maori soldier, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment in the Magistrate’s Court, Auckland, yesterday, for assaulting Constable' Vincent while in the execution of his duty. The police stated that the constable was speaking to a group of Maori soldiers in Queen Street on Saturday evening. Hiroki rushed in and hit Vincent in the mouth, causing a tooth to go through his cheek. He then assaulted another constable and knocked his helmet off. The scene became ugly and a baton had to be used to arrest Hiroki.

Simpler Clothes Proposed. Proposals for the simplification of clothing are reported to have been submitted to the trade in New Zealand, embodying restrictions similar to those introduced in other countries. When' these come into force, it is expected that no more full-length frocks, including afternoon, evening and dinner frocks, will be manufactured. Garments which, it is understood, may not be made include bridge coats, coatees, cloaks or wraps, except waterproof capes; costumes or suits of more than two garments; beach-wear, excepting bathing suits, shirts or shorts; and two-piece frocks including ensembles with long coats, jackets or boleros.

Bishop Selwyn Anniversary. One hundred years after Bishop Selwyn preached his first sermon in Nelson his memory was honoured by the unveiling of a stone on the eastern side of Church. Hill, almost on the spot where he pitched the tent which served as a church. The ceremony was performed on Sunday in the presence of a large congregation by the sixth Bishop of Nelson, the Rt. Rev P. W. Stephenson. At a service in the cathedral the sermon was preached by the Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt Rev F. A. Bennett. The service was attended by the mayor and mayoress, city councillors, and members of the committee of the Early Settlers’ Memorial Association.
