P. & A. SOCIETY

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr W. Howard Booth presided over a fair attendance of members at a meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society on Saturday. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. A. McLeod, V. L. Robinson and Geo. E. Allen. ■ i I The chairman referred to the deaths of Mesdames G. Shaw and R. W. McLaren, and members stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to their memory. Letters of sympathy are to be forwarded to the relatives.

The treasurer reported a credit balance of £lB5 Ils sd.

Information was received that the fat lamb competitions held in conjunction with the Masterton A. and P. Association would take place as usual, members were of the opinion that if the entries warranted it the competition should not be allowed to lapse. It was resolved that the Wairarapa P. and A. Society’s committee in connection with the competition be Messrs C. L. Reynolds, V. L. Robinson, Jas. Fisher, A. Hamilton and the secretary. The damaged caused to the society’s offices by the earthquake was discussed at length, and it was resolved that Messrs W. Howard Booth, Geo. Brown, V. L. Robinson, C. L. Reynolds and the secretary go into the matter of the cost of repairs and report to a meeting of the committee.

RED CROSS SOCIETY CARTERTON BRANCH. A meeting of the committee of the Carterton sub-Centre of the Red Cross Society was held m the borough offices on Friday. The Parkvale and Dalefield-Mata-rawa Institutes were thanked for helping to supply cakes to the soldiers in the South Wairarapa hospitals; _ the Parkvale Institute for 7 small eiderdowns and Mrs Teal for 2 large bed covers. The sewing group reported having made during the month, 6 pairs of pyjamas, 2|- dozen pillow slips, 3 knitted waistcoasts, 2 pullovers and 1 scarf. The transport section reported haying held a very successful dance in July and of taking part in an E-P-S--transport trial. Sixteen members had sat for their A.P.P. examination and all passed, nine with honours. It was decided to purchase regulation capes’ and veils for senior members who may be called on to assist in hospitals.

RACING CLUB ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Carterton Racing Club states, inter alia: The appropriation account discloses that the balance is now reduced to £167 2s Bd. The income ac-■ count, after providing for depreciation ot £219 10s 6d. and having written oil bad debts amounting to £57 10s, discloses a loss of £217 6s lOd. The farm income account shows a profit of £245 Ss Id. Consequent on the occupation of the racecourse on January 10 1942, it became necessary to dispose of all’ live stock. These realised prices which resulted in a profit of £B7 15s 7d. The res-; ponse to the club's effort to raise funds foi painting the buildings was thwarted owing to the present occupation of the course. £6l was collected and. credited to donors. A drive for members prior to our last race meeting was productive of good results. The total now on the roll is 164. It is proposed to ask members to help the club by continuing with their annual subscriptions to enable a fund to be set aside for the renovation and painting of the buildings. Ail honorary officials and six stewards retire, but are eligible for re-election. The retiring stewards are Messrs H. J. Brown, G. H. Eaton. C. Jensen, J. Johnson, R. G. Kemble and G. A. Vincent.

Borough Council. A special meeting of the Carterton Borough Council will be held tonight to adopt, by way of special order, the New Zealand standard code of building by-laws. Agricultural Club. At a meeting of the Carterton Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club it was decided to hold the annual judging

this year on the High School grounds at a date to be fixed at the next meeting. Any boy or girl can enter a calf and a lamb. There is no age limit so long as he or she can lead the calf. There will be a competition for the best pet lamb', any colour, and the leading of lambs will not be taken into consideration at the Carterton group judging ' x • H Soldiers to be Entertained. In the Clareville Hall this evening a number of soldiers will be entertained They are J. Sewell, I. Fisher, G. Niech and S. Phelps. Dancing will commence at 8 o’clock and good music will be supplied . The committee which is conducting’ the dance hope to see a large attendance.

Personal. Mr and Mrs H. H. L. Meyrick, of Frankton Junction, are spending a holiday in Carterton. Patriotic Dance. The weekly dance held by the Carterton Patriotic Committee and the Y.M.C.A. was held in the State Theatre on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance and a most enjoyable time was spent to music played by the oi’chestras of Messrs T. Udy and F. Pool. Extras were' played by Mesdames Duggan and N. F. Teal and Miss M. Herrick. Two lucky spot waltzes were held, one being won by Sergeant Ward and Miss M. McLean and the other by Private O’Leary and Miss C. Talbot. Mr L. M .Clark was M.C. The supper arrangements were under the supervision of the Carterton members of the Mother s League.
