OFFENSIVE PLANS

DISCUSSED BY CHURCHILL & SMUTS RECOVERY OF LOST GROUND IN AFRICA. TRIBUTE TO 'GENERAL AUCHINLECK. (Received This Day. 12.35 p.m.) PRETORIA, August 23. “Mr Churchill and 1 discussed what can be done in 1942 and what could be done for great offensives in 1943,” said General Smuts, referring to his meeting with Mr Churchill in Cairo.” He added: “The lost ground in North Africa must be recovered. I am convinced that it can be cleared of the enemy, if we plan properly, with the men and material at our disposal.” Referring to the North Africa command General Smuts said Mr Churchill had to make changes, but they were no reflection on the men concerned. “It is not a question,” said General Smuts, “of commanders or personalities they may be the ablest in the world but we must plan for victory. General Auchinleck is one of the ablest commanders I have ever met. I have the highest opinion of him, but that does not mean that he is the best man to win that victory.”
