“GIVE US GUNS!”
CELEBRATIONS IN BRAZIL OVER DECLARATION OF WAR, w URUGUAY LIKELY TO TAKE “FURTHER STEPS.” (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.25 p.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO, August 23. Sweeping searchlights over the haroour, shrieking police cars, rounding up Axis nationals and patriotic crowds chanting: “Give us guns! Death to Germany!” witness Brazil’s entry into the war, while hundreds cf Axis nationals tried nightly to escape to Uruguay. , The Uruguayan Government, however, which has granted Brazil nonbelligerent treatment and hinted that “further steps will probably be taken,” has ordered its authorities to detain the Axis refugees and extradite them to Brazil. Militarists are concentrating on the stiffening of the defences of Brazil’s Atlantic bulge, which is only 1,700 miles from Africa and therefore the continent’s most vulnerable point. They are also paying close attentionto Vichy-ruled French Guinea, which is athwart the BrazilAfrican communication line.
