The threat to Stalingrad grows more serious every hour. The battle of the river crossing is now at its height. It is not yet clear whether the whole of the German forces which crossed the Don yesterday have been thrown back or not. Mopping up operations are''reported to be still in progress on the eastern bank. , , , . South-west of Stalingrad the Germans appear to be making little progress, in spite of intense pressure during the last four days. In the Eastern Caucasus the Russians have retired to new positions to meet the German thrust towards the Grozny oilfields. ... , There is no confirmation of a Berlin claim to have opened a new offensive in the Orel sector, south-west of Moscow. It is now confirmed that Russian aircraft raided Warsaw, East Prussia and Upper Silesia last night. Big fires, were started. The raid was directed against the enemy’s war industry. Thirteen big-fires were seen in Warsaw and high explosives fell around the f central railway station. All the planes returned.
