He also paid tribute to the work of the Association’s secretary, Mr D. Costello, who today left for Waiouru. His loss was a serious one to the Association but he felt sure that the good work would be carried on. He referred to the increased popularity of girls’ indoor basketball. Commencing in 1939 with seven girls’ teams, this year a total of 23 had been playing championship matches. One pleasing feature was that the Rangers team, which last year accounted for the junior championship had this season won the B grade cup. He also congratulated the representative A grade team which journeyed to Palmerston North last week on their success. Special thanks were extended to Mr F. Stains (timekeeper) and Mr G. Davis (scorer) who had carried out their duties consistently every week. The following are the winners: Ladies junior, State Kitchenette; ladies’ B grade. Rangers; ladies’ A grade, W.F.C.A.; men’s division, A.S.C.

At the conclusion of the presentation of the trophies Miss F. Bellis, on behalf of the girls’ basketball teams, presented Mr Costello with a military holdall as a small token of their thanks for the splendid help he had been to the various teams and wished him every success.

The chairman, Mr G. Daubney, on behalf of the Association, presented the secretary with a fireside chair and in his remarks referred to the splendid work Mr Costello had carried out during the years he had been secretary. Mr C. W. Gaze, the Y.M.C.A. secretary, thanked Mr Costello for his kindly help and consideration over a period of years. A presentation was also macle to a strong supporter of the Association, Mr J. W. Hayden, who is leaving shortly for Auckland. Mr Hayden has been a member of the committee since the Association was formed and has been a tower of strength in all their activities.
