U-BOATS DESTROYED
OFF BRAZILIAN COAST ' IN VICINITY OF RECENT SINKINGS. ONE BY UNITED STATES PLANES. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.20 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 19. Brazilian officials announced that United States patrol planes yesterday sank a German submarine believed to be responsible for sinking some of the five Brazilian vessels whose loss was reported yesterday, Brazilian planes; also sank another submarine in the same vicinity, about fifty miles .rom the coast. Survivors from two of the torpedoed Brazilian ships have arrived at Bahia, in Brazil. They reported that the submarine which torpedoed one passenger ship within sight of the coast waited for an hour and then destroyed a second vessel while- it was picking up survivors from the first ship. The Brazilian Government has ordered all Brazilian vessels in the coastal service to proceed to the nearest safe port and remain there until submarine menace is overcome. Soldiers on leave have been recalled urgently to duty and the Navy has forbidden furloughs for regular reserves.
