ADDRESS BY SIR C. NEWALL
VALUE OF FIRST AID TRAINING.

WELLINGTON, This Day. ■ “The danger to these islands of attack has not diminished since I addressed you a year ago,” said the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, in his address at the opening session of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, in Wellington yesterday. “I told you then that everyone should be taught first-aid to help others, and this is no less urgent today. I am not saying we are going to be attacked, but the danger is no less. , ... “Educational work of this nature is a matter of national importance, particularly so in the Junior Red Cross. This is teaching citizenship in its best form.” His Excellency said that he and Lady Newall were truly glad to be present at the conference. They had a profound admiration for the society and its work. They had seen its activities in all parts of the Dominion they had visited. The work was greatly appreciated in peace time, and its standard had been maintained in the period of great expansion. His Excellency also made appreciative reference to the V.A.D. work, to the society’s ■part in the joint work under the National Patriotic Fund, and to the work for the sick, wounded, and prisoners of war.
His Excellency concluded by thanking the society for the honour done Lady Newall, and himself, in asking her to become commandant-in-chief of the Voluntary Aid Detachments. Among those present for the opening were ihe Mayor of Wellington, Mr Hislop, the Director-General of Medical Services, New Zealand Forces, Brigadier Bowerbank; Brigadier A. E. Conway, representing the Chief of the New Zealand General Staff; Mrs Fraser, Miss Lambie and Miss Willis.
