At some points German tanks and artillery have already reached the western bank of the Don. The enemy threat from the south-west has opened up again. The Germans made some progress, but were forced back to their original positions. There is still no news of the enemy’s thrust towards Astrakhan and the Caspian Sea. Fighting is reported about 200 miles from Astrakhan and 150 miles from the Caspian Sea at its nearest point. The Russians have made a withdrawal in the Mineralnye Vody area. In the Western Caucasus the enemy, who is south of the Kuban River, is threatening the Black Sea ports but the Russians are putting up a stout defence.
