LEAGUE OF MOTHERS
ANNUAL MEETING HELD IN MASTERTON YESTERDAY ELECTION OF OFFICERS The annual meeting of the League of Mothers was held in the Methodist Hall yesterday afternoon, Mrs L. B. Maunsell presiding over a large attendance of members. Members stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of sympathy with Mrs Chesterman and Mrs Darvill, who had suffered bereavements. The annual report, which was adopted, recorded a membership of 298. It was stated that the following addresses had been given during the year: •'Steadfastness of Character." bv Archdeacon E. J. Rich; “The League’s Sure Foundations.” by Mrs Mernngton: "The Urgent Need for Christian Character Training for Children,” by Dr. John Laird: "New Zealand Women in War Service Overseas " bv Miss Ethel Law, Dominion secretarv of the Y.W.C.A.: "Air Raid Precautions'." bv Miss F. Pickett, Health Department: "Loyalty,” by Mrs Wall, Dominion secretary of the League; and "Syria.” by Mrs M. Cleghorn. The League had provided tea for service men on two occasions, had assisted the staffing of Y.M.C.A. buffets at the various camps and had held two shop days for the Patriotic Committee. Monthly hampers of cakes, etc., and parcels of clothing had been forwarded to the Mission lot Seamen, and knitted articles sent to League Headquarters. Thanks were accorded to St. Matthew’s Vestry and the Methodist Church for the use of halls, to the speakers, Mrs Hope and the choir, to the tea hostesses, those in charge of the creche, to the Press, to Mrs N. H. Prior for her many years of service as tea convenor, and to Mrs Heycler for her work as magazine secretary. Mrs Maunsell was unanimously elected president. She was accorded musical honours and presented with a box of flowers as she resumed the chair for her 12th year of office. Mrs Lee, in proposing Mrs Maunsell for the position of president, said that Mrs Maunrell so thoroughly exemplified the aims and objects of the League that she was an incentive to all members to follow her pleother officers elected were: Vice-presi-dents, Mesdames E. J. Rich, D. McNeur, H. Kings and Miller Hope: treasurer, Mrs C. Mabson; secretary, Mrs L. Hunter; committee. Mesdames J. Blackwood, E. J. Brown, A. Corskie, Gaskin. Traynor, E. G. Norms",'.. N. Lee. F. Taylor, H. R. Keltie, T. A. Russell. Ogilvie. W. Marchbank, J. Russell, KentJohnston. Baillie, Bull and N. R. Cunningham. Mrs Miller Hope reported on the work of the choir during the past year. The speaker for the meeting was the Rev. H. Kings, who dealt with life in a military camp. The arrival of q, “rookie” at camp, his being issued with clothes, equipment and bedding was described in a humourous way by Mr Kings. Many adjustments had to be made to the new way of life and the work of many of the League members in the Y.M.C.A. and its camp buffets brought a touch of home and was much appreciated by the soldiers. Mr Kings touched a little on his' life as a Padre and showed the great value of personal contact in directing men to the Christian way of life. To be equipped militarily was necessary, but to be equipped spiritually was vital. Mrs ’Maunsell thanked Mr Kings for his interesting address and said that there was not a member but was interested in some lad in uniform. A trio was sung by Mesdames Snowsill. Heyder and Speight and Mrs R. Miller gave two recitations. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames A. Torrance, K. Wright, Butler, Stains. Henderson’ and Woollett.
