GREYTOWN

BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton). Councillors W. A. Tate, I. Blissett, A. Stuart, E. Balfour, G. T. Eagar, li. J. Farley, F. Wood, H. C. Trotman, H. McKenna. The Public Works engineers submitted a report on the condition of the brick buildings in the borough and made recommendations as to repairs and the strengthening necessary to make them safe. The New Zealand Theatres, Ltd., wrote asking for permission to screen pictures on Sunday for soldiers and friends. The mayor explained that the recent legislation gave him power to grant permission to show pictures on Sundays. As a matter of courtesy he placed the matter before the council. The council agreed that in the present conditions it. was desirable to show pictures on Sunday evenings. The Town Clerk reported that 160 chimneys had been erected to date by the temporary staff. This number did not include those done privately. Mr J. H. Rees wrote resigning his position as custodian of the Town Hall. The Town Hall Committee were authorised to fill the. vacancy. PERSONAL I The friends of Mrs G. Maloney will regret to hear that her father died at Palmerston North yesterday. Benefit Dance. A dance will be held on Friday night in Greytown in aid of Mr and Mrs Manihera and family who lost their house and contents by a fire following the recent earthquake. A few items between dances will be contributed by a battalion. Good entertainment is assured. The local Patriotic Committee has kindly offered to control the catering, etc. A raffle will be held, the prize being a magnificent piece of Maori carving which may be seen, in Mr H. G. Carter’s window. This piece of workmanship was on view in the Centennial Exhibition and is considered to be of outstanding merit. TOWN HALL DOUBLE PROGRAMME. At the Town'Hall tomorrow night there will be a double programme headed by “Moon Over Burma” ano “Weekend for Three.” The former is an exciting drama in which Dorothy Lamour, Robert Preston, and Preston Foster have the leading roles. In “Weekend for Three,” Zasu Pitts, Ed. Everett Horton and Dennie O’Keefe provide excellent comedy.
