ANGER IN BRAZIL
OVER SINKING OF FIVE SHIPS

ANTI-GERMAN DEMONSTRATIONS
IN RIO. (Received This Day, 12.50 p.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO, August 18. The Brazilian Ambassador in Montevideo, Senor Luzardo, said that after torpedoes had struck, a shell from the Baependy sank the submarine. Strongly-worded Brazilian editorials have fanned antiAxis sentiment after the sinking of five Brazilian ships. Large crowds demonstrated outside German stores, demanding vengeance for the sinkings. Public anger is intensified by assertions that the ships were sunk in a shark-infested area. „ The Montevideo newspaper “Eltiemt which is considered to be the Presidential mouthpiece, commenting on the sinkings, declared that the whole of America was at war. “Since yesteiday, it added, “your Brazilian brothers have been with you.”
A message from Buenos Aires yesteiday reported that the 4800-ton BiaziL ian freighter ]3aependy was torpedoed and sunk off the Brazilian coast. About 1000 Brazilian troops' were lost. The Brazilian Government announced the sinking of three ships, the Baependy, the Araraquara and the Annibnlbenevolo, off the Brazilian coast. The Brazilian Embassy spokesman said that the Baependy was escorting troops from southern Brazil to Pernambuco when she was torpedoed with the loss of 600 to 700 lives.
The Press Propaganda Department in a statement said: “Our country does not flinch before such brutality. The Government is examining methods that can be taken. In the face of these events the population should remain calm and confident. Crimes practised against the lives and goods of Brazilians will not go unpunished.” A later message stated that the Brazilian Government bad announced that submarines have sunk two more Brazilian vessels in addition to the three previously announced. All were torpedoed off the Brazilian coast.
