BRITISH SUBMARINES

SUCCESSFUL OPERATIONS IN MEDITERRANEAN & OFF NORWAY. ENEMY SUPPLY SHIPS SUNK. LONDON, August 18. The Admiralty states that reconnaissance shows that one of the two Italian cruisers hit by torpedoes in the Malta convoy battle has about 60 feet of her hull missing. British submarines are keeping up their good work against Axis ships in the Mediterranean and on the Norwegian coast. In the Mediterranean three enemy supply ships in a convoy were attacked. One was sunk and another probably hit. In another attack, one Axis vessel was left sinking and a second is claimed as probable. Submarines also attacked a north-ward-bound convoy off the Norwegian coast and scored hits on two of three supply ships. It is believed that both were sunk, as only one supply ship and its escort were seen afterwards. BOLD FEAT CREDITED TO RUSSIAN SUBMARINE. SHIP SUNK IN NORWEGIAN HARBOUR. LONDON, August 17. A submarine, believed to be Russian, succeeded in penetrating Hammerfest harbour, northern Norway, and escaping after sinking a Norwegian ship with about 200 German soldiers aboard.
