NEW APPOINTMENT
REGARDED AS SIGNIFICANT HOME COMMAND IN JAPAN. GENERAL TRANSFERRED FROM CHINA. (By Telegraph--Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, Noon.) NEW YORK, August 17. The Tokio radio quoted a War Office announcement that LieutenantGeneral Ushiroku, former Chief of Staff of the China forces had been appointed Commander-in-Chief in the Central Defence headquarters in Japan and promoted to the rank of general. The “Asahi’ ’commented that the appointment was significant and showed the increased importance of the defence of the mother country, especially the cast coast, since the first phase of the war operations in Asia had ended. Lieutenant-General Shozo Kawabe has succeeded General Ushiroku in the China post.
