AIR AND NAVAL FORCES 36 JAPANESE SEAPLANES DESTROYED. ENEMY WARSHIPS RETREAT. LONDON, August 17. A Washington message states that United States marines are nbw well established in the Guadalcan-ar-Tulagi area in the Solomons. Eighteen Japanese seaplanes were smashed before they could get into action and another 18 were destroyed, when they attacked transports and warships. Japanese cruisers and destroyers attacked the landing forces, but they were engaged by United States warships and retreated. Both sides suffered damage.
