ON APPROACHES TO STALINGRAD
Maintained! by Soviet Forces TREMENDOUS ENEMY EFFORTS FAIL FIERCE FIGHTING IN NORTH CAUCASUS
LONDON, August 16. Fierce fighting in Russia is still taking place in the Don Basin. Enemy tanks, mechanised infantry and motorised artillery are malting tremendous efforts to break through to Stalingrad, but the latest news is that they are being held by Soviet forces and have not yet been able to cross the river. The threat to Astrakhan and the Lower Volga has not increased in the past 24 hours. Enemy progress has also been stopped for the time being in all but one of the sectors in the north Caucasus. The Germans are within 150 miles of the oilfields at Grosney. Fighting is exceptionally severe in this area and both sides have suffered heavy losses. All German attempts to establish bridgeheads on the K.uban River have been smashed by the Soviet forces. _ ' At Voronezh, the Russians are still having the best of the fighting. The Soviet forces are steadily improving their positions.
