WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT PARKVALE (“Times-Age” Special.) , Mrs D. Adams presided at the monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute. Wool was distributed to members to be made into garments for members of the forces. It was reported that several patriotic parcels had been packed during the month. A playette was presented by Misses H. McKinnon and J. Phelps. They also played a pianoforte duet. A competition was won by Mrs D. N. Adams. The competitions resulted as follows:—Seniors: Decorated vase, Mrs N. McKinnon, 1; Mrs E Rose, 2. Juniors: Embroidered d’oyley, Miss J. Phelps ,1; Miss M. Lukies, 2. The hostesses were Mrs Conwell, Misses G. Lukies and P. Jensen. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute was held yesterday afternoon, when Mrs Pink presided over a fair attendance of members. It was arranged that members should supply cakes for military hospitals on September 4. An amusing playette, entitled “My Engagement,’’ was presented by two members of the Parkvale Women s Institute (Misses Heather McKinnon and June Phelps). The item was well produced and prolonged applause was accorded the players. A piano duet was also given by these two talented ladies. The competitions resulted as follows: Meringue cake, Miss Ray 1, Mrs H. Leete 2, Mrs Hawke 3. Three spring flowers: Mrs Pink 1, Miss Wolters 2, Miss Ray 3. Personal Items. At the funeral of Mr F. T. Prouse, of Wainui-o-mata, the pall-bearers were Messrs W. E. Prouse, W A. Haste, R. V. Haste, W. L. Haste, C. Lee and J. Martin. The engagement is announced of Daphne Iris, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Sewell, Belvedere Street, Carterton, to L.A.C W’ilson Adam Houliston, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Adam Houliston, Kakapuaka, Balclutha. . i Leading Aircraftman W. A. Houliston, R.N.Z.A.F., who has been spending leave in Carterton, has returned to duty. Mr J. A B. Lawrence, manager of Messrs Watson and Co’s drapery business, is laid aside with illness. Hockey. The Carterton senior ladies’ team to play the College team at Carterton on Saturday will be: T. Compton, D. Dunce. M. Parker, K. Te Tau. B. Malcolm, F. Jensen, V. Ward, Z, Ward, A. Scott, I. Parker, Mrs Playle. Church Service. r . A Church of England service will be held at Longbush on Sunday at 2.30 p.m.
