One of the few, if not the only New Zealand armourer fitter posted to an American fighter squadron, is Corporal Clifford Crawford, of Gore. Corporal Crawford instructs Americans on the servicing of Spitfires. He declared: “They , are grand chaps and pick up things quickly. 1 have to give lectures and demonstrations. They are keen for any new idea. I have never seen better tool kits than theirs. They work flat out when on a job. They want me to remain with them and I hope I will be allowed to.”
