Panzer Columns Broken Up By Soviet Artillery
SUCCESSFUL RUSSIAN COUNTER ATTACKS
IN VITAL AREAS
ATTEMPT TO STEM ENEMY ADVANCE ON
NOVOROSSISK
LONDON, August 13. Reinforced. German armies on two battlefronts are still trying to batter their way through to Stalingrad but the Russians are holding them at bay. South-west of the city, Marshal Timoshenko, outnumbered in men and tanks, brought up large i eserves of artillery and laid down a, terrific barrage, which broke up the enemy panzer columns. Soviet tanks then dashed into the battle, with divebombers in support. The enemy again pressed on and by sheer weight of numbers captured some strategic heights. The Russians launched a heavy counter-attack and drove back the enemy all along the line. In another sector the enemy captured some ground, but the Russian army is still firmly holding jts line. In the Caucasus the Russians continue to resist stubbornly with, varying results. The Russians are fighting fiercely to prevent the Germans from swarming across the Kuban River in strength in an attempt to attack the naval base of Novorossisk, on the Black Sea.
