MEETING OF CENTRAL COMMITTEE DISABLED SOLDIERS PLACED IN EMPLOYMENT. SOCIAL EVENING TO BE HELD. The Central Committee of the Wairarapa R.S.A. met in Masterton last night, the president, Mr H. J. Brass being in the chair. There were also present: Messrs H. G .Alexander, F. Shearer, E. L. Nicholson, H. Nuttall, L. S. Nicol, J. D. O’Connor (Masterton), C. A. Chennells (Carterton), Miss Higginson (Greytown), Messrs J. W. Fellingham, J. A. Halpin (Featherston), N. H. Thomas and N. C. D. Mason (Martinborough). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs,L. T. Wylie (Masterton), F. L. Barr and A. G. Rabbitts (Carterton) A The Internal Affairs Department advised that the Public Works Department had been authorised to have all soldiers’ headstones in the Featherston Cemetery attended, to, in addition to. ■the lettering on the general monument. A sub-committee was set up to report on the condition of soldiers’ graves in the Masterton Cemetery.The headquarters of the New Zealand R.S.A. wrote setting out the liability of members of the armed forces in respect to taxation. The resignation of Mr W. R. McMinn as a vice-president of the Wairarapa R.S.A. on account of his transfer to Wellington was accepted with regret. Mr I-I. J. Brass was selected as the association’s nominee on the Wairarapa Rehabilitation Committee, which was shortly to be set up. by the Government. It was reported that to date three Wairarapa members of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force had been returned to the district and discharged with arm amputations and that the association had been instrumental in placing two of these men, through the Disabled Ex-servicemen’s Rehabilitation League, in permanent employment and that the third had been placed privately. The association’s financial membership was reported to total 795, as compared with 786 in August last year. It was stated that there was every possibility of this year’s membership overtaking last year’s record. Ten new members were elected, including four members of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force and one British soldier. It was decided to order 10,000 poppies for the 1943 Poppy Day campaign. * The committee agreed to hold a social evening for members on September 16 in tile Masonic Hall. Messrs C. A. Chennells and A. E. Prentice gave lengthy reports on proceedings of the New Zealand R.S.A. Dominion Council meeting held in Wellington in June.
