The monthly meeting of the Mata-rawa-Dalefield Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs W. Nielsen. The competitions resulted as follows: Seniors: Navy pullover, Mrs L. Rogers 1, Mrs G. Sadler 2, Mrs W. Knowles 3. Best bloom, Mrs L. Rogers 1, Mrs G. Sadlei’ 2, Mrs W. Ticehurst 3. Juniors: Pullover, Jean Conwell 1, Avis Hodder 2, Beth Sadler 3. Best 1 bloom, Beth Sadler 1, Joyce Goodin 2, Doreen Barnett 3. Afternoon tea was served. New Library Books. The following new books have been added to the shelves of the Carterton Public Library:—“Spring Magic,” D. E. Stevenson; “The Inscrutable Nymph,” A. Duffield; “Traitor’s Purse,” M. Allingham; “Pied Piper,” Nevil Shute; ;“All That Glitters,” T. P. Keys; “Wild is the River,” L. Bromfield; “Battle of Sea Ways,” G. H. Johnston; “Twelve Disguises,” F. Seeding. Personal Items. Mr V. A. F. Matthews, of the Carterton Post Office staff, has received notice of his transfer to Taradale, Hawke’s Bay, as postmaster. Messrs Cyril R. Porter and Brian Aplin, of the Carterton Post Office staff, passed their air force examinations in Wellington yesterday, and will shortly join that branch of the armed forces. Among those soldiers in the Middle East who are reported missing is Corporal F. H. Fraser-Smith, who was for-; merly a well-known resident of Carterton and was a Wairarapa and Wellington representative footballer. His wife lives at Waikouaiti. Tennis Club Dance. The annual dance of the Carterton Tennis Club, held in the State Theatre last evening was a decided success. A most enjoyable time was spent to excellent music supplied by Mr T. Udy’s dance band. Much appreciated extras were played by Miss Verna Irwin, Mr S. Tawhi, Driver Jeffries and Sapper Rush. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr A. D. Taylor. Mr W. M. Worsfold was secretary and a ladies’ committee had charge of the supper arrangements. P. & A. Society Meeting.
The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society’s general committee will be held on Saturday next.
