THREE LANDINGS

IN SOLOMON ISLANDS MADE BY AMERICAN MARINES. CONSOLIDATION OF POSITIONS IN PROGRESS. LONDON. August 12. A Washington message states tnat American marines have landed on three islands in the area of Tulagi in the Solomon Islands and are now engaged in consolidating their positions. COURSE OF BATTLE CORRESPONDENT’S CONJECTURE. EVENTS SINCE FRIDAY LAST. (Received This Day, 1.10 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 12. An interesting conjecture about the course of the Solomons Island battle is offered by the Washington correspondent of the “Herald-Tribune. Quoting an unnamed naval officer he says the action may have taken the following form since Friday: First, a bombardment of the enemy aerodromes by Army and Navy bombers and torpedo planes; second, a struggle for air supremacy; third, an advance by the heaviest American surface units, adding their gunfire barrage to the aerial bombardment and helping to provide a protective curtain ior the landing of troops; fourth, possible paratroop landings to aid commandos from transports and barges; fifth, shelling of the enemy air and troop bases by cruisers and destroyers plunging towards shore under an umbrella of aerial and naval fire; sixth, aircraft carriers standing by with battleships, cruisers and destroyers between them and the enemy, and sending planes repeatedly against the Japanese.
