RESULTS GAINED

ALLIED NAVAL FORCES STILL IN ACTION '

SUPPORTING GROUND FORCES.

FOOTHOLDS GAINED BY SHOCK TROOPS.

LONDON, August 12

An Australian correspondent at an advanced Allied base says that while there is no hard news of the battle in the Solomons the general feeling is that our forces are still making progress toward their objective, that is, the occupation of the islands in lhe Tulagi area.

The whole weight of the offensive has been thrown against Tulagi and Guadalcanal’ Islands, and it is believed that United States marines and other shock troops are firmly established in this area.

Bitter fighting is in progress as our forces keep up intensive pressure against the enemy. Allied naval forces are still giving support to the ground troops in face of heavy attacks from land-based Japanese bombers. After a meeting of the Pacific War Council in Washington, members stated that they knew nothing more' of the Solomon Islands battle than had been made public.
