ATTEMPTED GERMAN DRIVE ON STALINGRAD Resistance in North Caucasus Stiffening HEAVY ENEMY LOSSES REPORTED GROUND GAINED BY SOVIET TROOPS IN VORONEZH AREA LONDON, August 2. German forces on the Stalingrad front are being reinforced with tanks, motorised infantry and masses of planes, but the latest reports indicate that the Russians continue to stand firm. The great steel city of Stalingrad is menaced from more than one direction. One Soviet unit had to fall back in the face of new and increasingly violent attacks, but there is no indication that any major withdrawal has been made. In some sectors the Russians have counter-attacked and have actually improved their positions. Russian resistance in the Caucasus has become more enective in the past 24 hours. Heavy fighting is reported in the Maikop oil district. In one area the Germans suffered heavy casualties and had to fall back. On the Upper Don, round Voronezh, Soviet troops have recaptured more villages and. are still pushing ahead.
