SPECIAL TROOPS
FOR OFFENSIVE ACTION AMERICAN AIRBORNE DIVISIONS. CANADIAN CORPORATION. (By Telegraph—-Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.5 a.m.) WASHINGTON, August 6. The Under-Secretary for War (Mr Patterson) announced the formation of the first two of an undisclosed number of entire divisions of airborne infantry, each of about 8,000 men. All weapons and equipment will be carried in planes and gliders. Tl)e airborne divisions arc described a’s swift-moving, hard-striking elements, necessary to unseat German control of Europe. The formation is also announced of a new American-Canadian force of super-commandos, specialists in offensive warfare. The Canadians and Americans will wear the same kind of uniform. Mr Patterson said an existing infantry division would be reorganised into two airborne divisions, each with about 8,000 troops. He also announced the formation of a special service force which, for the first time in history, will include Canadian troops for service in the United States Army. This force will be composed of men skilled in offensive operations, including parachuting, marine landings, mountain and desert fighting.
