ARTILLERY DUELS
AND ACTIVE AIR RAIDING ON THE EGYPTIAN FRONT. LAND PATROLS HARASSING ENEMY. LONDON, August 6. In Egypt there have been artillery duels on the central sector and bombers have attacked Axis gun positions and transports. On Tuesday night patrols were out all along the front, harassing the enemy and probing the defences. Allied air attacks on enemy shipping continue. Early today naval aircraft attacked a large concentration of enemy torpedo-boats and barges at Mersa Matruh. All the British planes got back. A dispatch from El Alamein published in a Berlin newspaper says that the R.A.F. offensive is worrying the Axis forces. “The British are largely superior in the air,” the article says, “and are attacking us with fighterbombers protected by fighters, even in the daytime.” DETAIL EVENTS CAIRO OFFICIAL REPORT. 1 (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.15 a.m.) RUGBY, August 6. A Cairo communique states: “On Tuesday night our patrol activity continued in all sectors. Yesterday our artillery shelled enemy positions in the central sector. Enemy artillery also was active. “Our light bombers and fighterbombers continued their attacks on enemy transport and gun positions in the central sector. Our fighters destroyed one enemy fighter. “We continued attacks on enemy shipping off the North African coast. “At Malta fighters shot down one enemy aircraft.”
