THE AIR FORCE

ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW

UNITS

WORKS AND MAINTENANCE.

PROVISION FOR REPAIR OF AERODROMES.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day.

An important development in the accelerated programme of the Royal New Zealand Air Force is the establishment of works and maintenance squadrons, and flights or works units, which are undertaking aerodrome maintenance work previously carried out by the Public Works Department. The Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) said today that the establishment of these units is designed to co-ordinate, under Air Force control, all aerodrome activities, thus removing the difficulty that might arise in the event of an attack on air bases. This means that the Air Force will be responsible for aerodrome repairs under such circumstances, but the Public Works Department will continue to construct aerodromes.

Mr Jones stressed the importance of ground facilities to a modern air force and said it vzas essential to have men on the spot to carry out repairs, such as filling bomb craters with the utmost speed and efficiency. The entry of Japan into the war, as well as calling for the establishment of new bomber, fighter and reconnaissance squadrons, had also led to aerodrome development.
