SOME GROUND LOST

IN HEAVY FIGHTING SOVIET TROOPS RESISTING STUBBORNLY. HEAVY LOSSES INFLICTED ON ENEMY. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) RUGBY, August 5. Particularly heavy German attacks on the Southern Russian front gained some ground yesterday, especially in the direction of Voroshilovsk, formerly Stavropol. Here the Germans apparently are advancing along the line of the main railway south-eastward into the Caucasus. A deep penetration apparently has been made between Salsk and the Bielaya Glina area and the Kushchevskaya area, southward of Rostov. Soviet official reports tell of heavy losses inflicted upon the enemy in the Kletskaya region. It is also stated that the Russians in the Zymlyanskaya area withdrew to new positions. In the region of Bielaya Glina the Russians troops have been engaged in heavy fighting against enemy tanks and motorised infantry, which had broken through. In the region of Kuschevskaya, heavy fighting, with numerically superior enemy forces, took place.
