In Russia the Germans have made further gains in their Caucasus drive, and are reported to have captured Salsk, the important railway junction on the Black Sea-Stalingrad railway. South of the Lower Don the enemy has advanced further into the Caucasus. The Russians have taken up new positions south of the Black Sea-Stalingrad railway line. Fierce battles are taking place in this area. A German High Command announcement claims that German troops have captured Yekaterinoesk. The situation in this area is said to be as serious as ever. Further up the Don the situation is more favourable. At some points the Russians are holding firm and counter-attacking. The threat to Stalingrad has lost its impetus, though more German reserves are being brought up.' The House of Commons held a secret session today to hear a statement by Mr C. R. Attlee. Open session was resumed after about 20 minutes. The House of Lords also held a short secret session.
