At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Chess Association Mr P. Kummer. of Masterton, was elected a vicepresident. Mr W. T. Ikin, manager for New Zealand for the Australian Mutual Provident Society, visited Masterton yesterday. Mr E. Palliser was appointed by the executive of the Automobile Associa-' tion (Wellington) last night to represent the association on the council of the North Island Motor Union.
The Bun. W. A. Bodkin, Minister of Civil Defence, will leave Wellington for the South Island tomorrow on civil defence business. His itinerary will include visits to Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill. The Minister expects to return to Wellington about August 14. Mr J. D. Baybutt, who left the position of Advertising Manager of the “Wairarapa Times-Age” in November, 1939, to join the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, is visiting Masterton. He left New Zealand with the Second Echelon and proceeded to England and later to the Middle East. Mr Baybutt has been invalided home, but. is making a good recovery. The late Mr Peter Neilson, who was found dead yesterday in his house at 47 Perry Street, Masterton, was about 80 years of age. He was a native of Sweden and had been, in New Zealand since 1880. He had worked on a number of stations on the East Coast. As he had recently been treated for heart trouble and a doctor was able to give a certificate of death, an inquest is not considered necessary. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the Chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service Ltd., following a service at 10 a.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.
