The weather was fine and sunny after a hard frost, and the going was a trifle soft on top, though it improved during the day. There was a good attendance and the totalisator handled £27,792 10s, compared with £22,100 last year, an increase of £5692 10s. The new racing season was opened in the North Island today with the annual race meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club, in association with the Dannevirke Hunt Club. The weather was fine, though cold, and the track in splendid order for this time of the year. A feature of the programme was the appearance of several horses who are engaged at the Grand National meeting, and among those to show good form were Malacca, Indian Sun, Poutatau and Rakanui.
There was a good attendance and the totalisator handled £17,530, compared with £lO,121, an increase of £7409.
